but thought country life must be rife with intrigue and criminals. We’d endure days in the car while our parents drove us back east to the small community where our grandparents lived. In that case, we’d visit her during long school breaks in the late 50’s and 1960’s. When we went home for a visit she’d excuse herself for an hour to watch her “piece.” We understood this reference because our grandmother used the same word to explain a daily time out for a daytime soap opera. I remember my mother used to enjoy the BBC TV series, which featured an old lady with lace collars, hat and gloves. However, I was always afraid the Ms Marple stories would be tediously old fashioned. I’m an avid fan of mysteries, especially series in which the acquaintance with the protagonist is long and there are many volumes to look forward to.
